Resurrecting the Feminine: Fuller Conversations Fall 2021 Session (In-Person/Outside) @ Shakti in the Mountains
Oct 21 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Resurrecting the Feminine: Fuller Conversations Fall 2021 Session (In-Person/Outside) @ Shakti in the Mountains | Johnson City | Tennessee | United States

The Fuller Conversations Fall 2021 Session is 5 Thursdays at 7, beginning on Oct. 21.

Edgar Allan Poe famously said that “the death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world.” Poe’s comment brings to mind the faint, flush-cheeked damsel, retiring and shy, so otherworldly that she must actually die to achieve her full potential as an idea rather than a fully-fledged human being. These days, not only can women star in their own stories, they can resist that narrative of the invisible, silent muse. And yet, Poe’s sentiment lingers—and women often have to unlearn all manner of social cues that render them silent or persuade them to take up as little space as possible. The wise Dr. Amy Linneman, in her talk about the feminism of roller derby, says that the hardest lesson for new skaters to learn is to “take up space.”

The Fall 2021 Fuller Conversations series will focus on taking up space in meaningful and collaborative ways. It will focus on how to live into our own gifts, how to speak into spaces of injustice, on behalf of others and ourselves. We will take up discussion of some amazing works by Sophocles, Natasha Trethewey, Emily Dickinson, Harryette Mullen, Rebecca Solnit, and Naomi Alderman.

Reading is optional but certainly not discouraged. Most texts can be found at the library or will be provided. We may meet inside with masks if the weather is too cool.

Thursdays, Oct 21, 2021 – Nov 18, 2021. 7 – 8:30 pm EST.
Co-ed. Registration required. Limited to 16 people.

Description:
A Global Movement Guided by Love
Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies.

The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world–for us all.

“Poet and activist Taylor (A Little Truth on Your Shirt) packs important ideas into this concise volume on body empowerment. “Radical self-love is not a destination you are trying to get to; it is who you already are,” she counsels…The author’s sensible and empathetic tone will lend comfort to readers and help them to see that no matter what their body type, they are beautiful.” Publishers Weekly

“‘Survival is damn hard, ‘ Sonya Renee Taylor says in the introduction to her marvelous new book, The Body Is Not an Apology. A writer, poet, educator, and performer, Taylor brings the message that self-sacrifice and self-flagellation keep us from our highest good. Her manifesto on radical self-love is life altering–required reading for anyone who struggles with body image.” Claire Foster | Foreword Review
