I invite you to go outside tonight and find the moon. She is full tonight and feeling herself. Allow the moon to illuminate what is normally hidden in the dark. If you are willing to look, then you will receive direction about what or whom in your life no longer serves you and needs to be released.

I am tapping into this full moon energy to support the way that I will guide the Going Within class. This six-class series, which began in early January, was designed so folks could explore what lies in the dark. While this endeavor often elicits feelings of uncertainty, and sometimes, outright fear, I find this work to be extremely helpful and liberating and am honored to support other people who are ready for the plunge.

Since not everyone is able to be a part of Going Within, I offer a home practice. If you would like to tap into the full moon energy and release something that no longer serves you, then please refer to the full moon ritual below. If you do and would like to share your experience, then please send me an email. I love hearing how people respond to the work.

I also invite you to review the upcoming events listed in the Spotlight section. All the February events are there and registration is open. Since some of our events are sold out (January’s Herbal Tea Workshop) or filling up quickly (Sound Bath Meditation), I encourage you to register early. Please keep in mind that registration closes 24-hours before an event. Out of respect for the facilitator, Shakti does not accommodate late registrations.

Wishing you a wonderful week,

Kim Bushore-Maki

Full Moon Ritual

The full moon this week happens exactly at 12:53 pm EST on January 25. The full moon energy is most potent the day before, the day of, and the day after the full moon.

This full moon is happening in the sign of Leo: a fire sun which proudly proclaims: This is me! Leo invites us to be bold, to be brave, and above all, to be ourselves. Because this full moon is in relationship with the planet of power and transformation (Pluto) and the planet of expansiveness and optimism (Jupiter), the reward is greater the deeper we delve into the darkness.

(If you want to know specifically where this full moon is impacting you, then get a copy of your natal chart and note which house the sign of Leo is. Each house represents a different area of your life. A great reference for understanding the zodiac houses may be found here.)

  • Prepare a space, both physically and mentally, which allows you to relax and to open. Minimize distractions and ask your people to leave you alone. This space may be indoors, ideally with a view of the moon. If you have the means to be outside (warm clothes, a fire), then give yourself the gift of fresh air and a clear view of the sky.
    • Materials needed: A notebook or journal, your favorite writing implements, and a candle or a fire.
    • Create an altar (optional) with items that reflect what you like about yourself. If you have trouble identifying what you currently like about yourself, then find items or imagery that reflects how you want to feel about yourself.
  • Start by closing your eyes (or staring into a flame) and taking some deep belly breaths. Eventually find an easy, natural pace of breathing. Wherever your body is touching the ground (or cushion), imagine little roots growing from your body into the earth. Picture your roots growing bigger and spreading both down and out. With each inhale, imagine you are drawing vital earth energy into your body. With each exhale, allow your worries, concerns, and tensions to drop toward the ground where they will be composted. Once your mind is clear and your body relaxed, place your hands over your heart.
  • With your hands over your heart, remember a time when you felt playful, joyful, or enlivened. Allow this memory to fully develop in your mind’s eye recalling as many details as you can. Notice how your body is responding to this memory. What sensations and emotions are present? Exaggerate the emotions until your entire body is enveloped by heart-warming, pleasurable feelings. Stay in this memory, with these pleasurable feelings for as long as you like.
  • When you are ready, use your notebook to record your experience with words and/or images. And then answer the following questions:
    • What about the memory that I recalled was playful, joyful, or enlivening?
    • How often do I experience similar moments of play, joy, or vitality?
    • What gets in the way of having more experiences of play, joy, and vitality?
    • What would I need to release to have more play, joy, and vitality in my life?
      • Hint: Sometimes it is not a person or a tangible obstacle that gets in our way. Sometimes it is a thought or belief.
  • After journaling, craft a sentence which boldly states what you are ready to release. Here is a template sentence:
    • Because I want more (play, joy, vitality, etc…), I let go of (name the thought, belief, relationship, commitment, role, behavior).
    • (For extra credit): My first step toward having more (the answer to the first blank: play, joy, vitality, etc…) is to (Name an action that you will take within the next 24 hours. Actions that are small and doable (15 minutes or less) are most effective.)
  • End your ritual by reconnecting with the roots that you grew at the beginning of the practice. Feel your connection with the earth. Recognize that your choice to experience more play, joy, and vitality benefits all living things.

Many moon blessings to you!
