Happy October! October is one of the busiest (best) months of the year at Shakti in the Mountains. In addition to launching the new Shakti Badge Program, we have a full schedule with a little something for everyone. We have multiple class series (Shadow Work starts tomorrow), workshops (Fermentation and Pickling is this Saturday), energy healing circles (Reiki Share is Sunday), and always Makerspace Open Hours on Friday afternoons. I’d thought I would leave you with a poem that is an oldie but a goodie. I was reminded of this poem last week when a flock of wild geese flew above my head in a cheerfully loud, V-formation. Here is Mary Oliver’s poem, Wild Geese:

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes,

Embark on an inspiring 7-week odyssey, “Transformative Narratives: An Expressive Arts Journey for Teens,” where the magic of sharing personal stories and seizing control of one's narrative is brought to life through the transformative power of expressive arts.

In this immersive experience, teenagers will engage in a variety of techniques, including story collecting, storytelling, improvisation, role playing, and more, all aimed at fostering deep connections and personal growth.

Teens will explore the importance of healthy connections. Through interactive activities, they'll learn the value of empathy, active listening, and open communication. Participants will delve into their personal stories. With the expressive arts as their tools, teens will delve into the art of storytelling. By sculpting narratives through visual arts, poetry, and theater, they'll learn to channel emotions and forge connections with their peers. Constructive feedback from the group encourages growth and refines their storytelling craftsmanship.

Through role playing and improvisation, teens will step into others' shoes and cultivate a deeper understanding of different perspectives and experience Embodied Empathy. They'll also learn techniques to foster emotional resilience and navigate challenges. Participants will take authorship over their narratives. With guidance, they'll refine their stories, focusing on themes of empowerment and personal growth. This process encourages teens to see themselves as agents of change and creators of their own futures.

We invite you to join us for a time of community and creativity in a space where you can participate in a wide array of art, craft and writing activities. As part of the School of the Lost Arts, the Shakti Makerspace is designed to be an evolving creative environment for community members.

In the Makerspace you will find equipment and supplies for a variety of expressive activities and craft projects. We will have examples and kits for seasonal projects to make from start to finish or you can use the available supplies to create something from your own imagination and interests. There will be supplies available for you to collage, color, paint, knit, crochet, sew, art journal and more. You can also bring any of your own projects to finish up in a space of shared creative energy and support. We hope in this way to offer something for everyone.

Use the Makerspace Open Hours as a time and space to mindfully focus in a peaceful, cooperative setting. You can make something, work on a Shakti Badge, write something or just enjoy being in the creative energy and see what emerges for you. There is no fee to participate in Makerspace Open Hours. Join us for a few minutes. Join us for the whole time. Join us for whatever fits into your schedule.

We offer this to the community as a space where we can use our hands to continue to open our hearts.

We look forward to creating with you.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to store your garden for the winter? Many people of these mountains used lacto-fermentation, pickling, and canning. Lacto-fermentation has many health benefits associated with it beyond preserving the harvest. As an added bonus, we will eat together. You will need to bring 1 quart jar and 3 pint jars. The jars will be filled with goodies for you to take home.

Ellen Harbin-Dabbs is a Tennessee native. Growing up in Tennessee State Parks, she learned many traditional skills that many have forgotten. She was taught the ways of the hearth by her mother and grandmother, Nanny. She was taught the outdoors by her father, who was an outdoors instructor and park ranger. Her adventures and recipes will keep you entertained as she passes along the knowledge of her mountain kin. She's always learning ways to live a simpler life.
